Welcome to the UK home of the Moto Giro or to use the correct original title - Giro d'Italia Motoclistico. We hope that this website will give you the background and basic information on what has become a widely respected international classic event now. The Moto Giro, as we now know it, was one of the major road races held in Italy from 1914 through till 1958, but following De Portago’s crash in the Mille Millia that year the Italian Government banned further races. Together with the Milano – Taranto race these were the premier events of the Italian race calendar. The real high spot though was from 1953 - 1957, with most of the major marques desperate to win. The event was run a few times in the 90s by one of the Italian motorcycle clubs, but these were small local Club events, not aimed at a wider geographic audience. In reality the big change came at the end of 2000, when the events company Dream Engine with backing from Ducati announced a recreation of the event to be run in 2001. This lead to international recognition, due to the global press coverage that they generated. There have now been 10 events, run by Dream Engine, normally between the middle of May and start of June. Each year the event moves round to different parts of Italy and has in fact even been run in Sicily twice now (2004 & 2007). The 2008 event started and finished in Rome, with the intention to run the 2011 event starting and finishing in Bologna and then heading out into Tuscany and Piedmonte. In 2007 a group of enthusiasts in the UK organised the 1st Mini Giro in the Oxford area, attended by 50+ people. This was an opportunity of those interested in the event from the UK to try the format of the Italian event without the need to commit to the expense of going to Italy and give an opportunity for people to practise ready for the following year.
